The Data Governance & Management Manager will lead enterprise-wide data governance initiatives, ensuring data quality, compliance, and security across the financial services and insurance sectors. This role is responsible for establishing and enforcing data governance frameworks, policies, and best practices to maintain data integrity, consistency, and regulatory alignment. The ideal candidate will collaborate with business, IT, and security teams to drive a culture of data stewardship and risk mitigation.
Job Description
As a Data Governance & Management Manager, you will develop and implement data governance strategies, standards, and frameworks to ensure effective data management, regulatory compliance, and risk control. You will work closely with data engineering, security, and business teams to define data ownership models, metadata management approaches, and governance KPIs. The role demands a strong understanding of financial services and insurance regulations to ensure adherence to compliance standards such as GDPR and POPIA.
Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement enterprise-wide data governance frameworks, policies, and standards.

Ensure compliance with regulatory and industry standards (GDPR, POPIA, BCBS 239, PCI-DSS).

Establish data ownership and stewardship programs to promote accountability across business units.

Implement and oversee data lineage, metadata management, and data quality initiatives.

Collaborate with data engineering, cybersecurity, and business teams to maintain secure and reliable data assets.

Monitor and optimize data governance KPIs, identifying areas for improvement.

Evaluate and recommend data governance tools and technologies for automation and efficiency.

Conduct risk assessments to ensure data security, privacy, and compliance best practices.

Lead data literacy and training initiatives to embed governance principles into the organizational culture.

Advocate for data-driven decision-making by ensuring accessibility and trust in enterprise data.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Management, Business, Information Systems, or a related field.

6+ years of experience in data governance, compliance, and enterprise data management.

In-depth understanding of financial services and insurance data regulations.

Experience with data cataloging, metadata management, and security frameworks.

Strong knowledge of data governance technologies (Collibra, Informatica, Alation, or equivalent).

Familiarity with data security best practices, including data masking, encryption, and role-based access controls.
